Vermiculite is a naturally-derived material commonly used in the horticulture, industrial, and construction sectors, among others. It can be found everywhere from potting mix to insulation and animal bedding and feed. The unique applications of perlite and vermiculite are many and varied. But what goes into producing vermiculite and what sets a vermiculite manufacturer apart? Let’s get into the details.
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that resembles mica. It is typically flat, shiny and charcoal to brown in color when found raw. Vermiculite is uniquely valuable because it is sterile and pH neutral. However, in order to be useful in a range of common and unique applications, vermiculite needs to be processed–this is the role of a vermiculite manufacturer. Vermiculite is formed by natural processes and is an inert substance with lightweight, absorbent, insulative and fire-resistant properties. Once expanded to an accordion-like appearance, known as its exfoliated form, vermiculite can be 20-30 times its original size. It is mined across the globe, from the United States to Brazil and throughout central and southern Africa. Vermiculite is available in the following five grades:
The mines extract, analyze, clean, screen, and size the ore, which is then graded and prepared for sale. Manufacturers and exfoliators purchase this ore, and it is transported by land and sea to their processing facilities. At these locations, the ore is heated and screened through the exfoliation process, then carefully packaged according to the specific requirements of each market and application where the product will be used. Much like a perlite manufacturer, vermiculite manufacturers typically have a hand in harvesting, processing, sorting, bagging or containerizing, and storing vermiculite in specialized facilities.
Vermiculite is mined from open-pit mines using heavy equipment. The raw material is then crushed, screened to remove impurities, sized, and loaded on trucks or covered hopper rail cars and bagged in metric ton totes and loaded into shipping containers for transport to specially equipped expansion plants, like the facilities at PVP Industries. There, we use our Incon vertical furnaces to superheat the raw vermiculite ore to temperatures between 1,472°F and 1,832°F (800°C - 1,000°C). This is called the exfoliation process, and it occurs when vermiculite ore is dropped through the top of a furnace. As it falls, the super high temperatures turn any trapped water vapor into steam, forcing the vermiculite to rapidly expand.
Original ore characteristics, like the deposit source, the initial flake size, specific mineral composition and purity will all impact the final product’s size, or grade. Finished PVP vermiculite is screened, sorted by its various grades of particle size, and stored in our warehouse. We store it according to size, but can also create custom blends of various vermiculite grades along with other products–like our custom blended soilless mix–for distributors. Some vermiculite is then bagged for retail or bulk use and shipped to distributors or customers in the construction, agriculture, and manufacturing industries.
PVP vermiculite is available in the following package sizes for resale or for use in products or production:
PVP Industries aims to offer as much customization as possible, and while it is more readily available for PVP perlite, PVP vermiculite presents fewer options due to overall availability and specific geological considerations. We work with both international and domestic mines through The Vermiculite Association to ensure that we can always supply clients with pure, high quality vermiculite in our five main grades.
Industries and retail establishments looking for a vermiculite manufacturer to work with need to ensure that the quality of the finished product is consistent and pure. It is what their clients expect and they can settle for nothing less. Each common and unique application of vermiculite is also typically size-dependent, so a distributor or commercial end-user will need to verify that the grade they require is going to be available when they need it. If specific mixes are needed or hard-to-find sizes are a must, then customers will want to verify with a vermiculite manufacturer that custom sizing is available.
It is also important that vermiculite distributors and dealers do their research to be sure that a vermiculite manufacturer can meet their needs on time, on budget, and that they have the proper equipment, facilities and any relevant industry-standard certifications on board. Vermiculite should always be high-quality, sterile and pure and an experienced vermiculite manufacturer should be able to provide samples to any potential clients who request them.
In general, it is going to be larger, well-established facilities like PVP Industries, Inc. that are able to provide consistent products along with customized sizes and densities. We can ship our products anywhere in the world, but for the fastest delivery and most reasonable lead times, choosing a local vermiculite manufacturer is the best bet to ensure lower freight costs and consistent supply.
At PVP Industries our 41,000 sq. ft. steel building, 14,500 sq. ft. cold storage warehouse, and 12,750 sq. ft. raw materials storage building make up the bulk of our operation. These facilities allow us to house roughly 3,000 tons of total raw material on our roughly 20 acres of land. This ample space ensures that we can sustain business demands with stored products while also consistently processing incoming raw materials. We own and operate two Incon furnaces and a Bouldon Lawson mixing line and bagging system that allow us to fill a wide range of containers for contract and private label packaging. Six shipping and receiving docks along with a portable dock ramp and additional equipment make packaging, storage and transport a breeze. We are always current on needed permits and remain compliant with relevant regulations governing our industry.
Companies vary in their business models, but at PVP Industries we are strictly manufacturers of perlite, vermiculite, and other aligned products. We source, process, produce and package vermiculite and we focus on providing a top quality product to vermiculite distributors and dealers in their desired quantities and package sizes. They then distribute PVP vermiculite to their customers and the products’ end users. Whether in agriculture, horticulture, construction or other industries, we supply the product and our distributors make it available for purchase by consumers. We also sell bulk quantities directly to industrial and commercial customers and preform contract packaging services for industrial and commercial customers.
Perlite Vermiculite Packaging Industries, Inc., has been at it since 1984, working hard and supplying the world with consistently high-quality vermiculite, among other products. We take pride in our history and look forward to the future, always with the goal of providing the best vermiculite around, for use in varied applications and across industries. We work with vermiculite distributors and dealers to supply large-scale industrial, horticultural, construction, commercial and retail needs with the very best PVP vermiculite.
