What is a Perlite Manufacturer?

Whether purchased in small bags at a home store or garden center, or used on a large scale in agricultural or industrial settings, perlite has to first be mined, processed, sifted and packaged. The majority of this work is done at the manufacturer level. What does this entail? What is involved in the perlite manufacturing process? What should perlite distributors and dealers look out for when selecting a perlite manufacturer to work with? And what is the difference between a perlite manufacturer and a perlite distributor or dealer? Let’s get into all the details.

What Does A Perlite Manufacturer Do?

Perlite is a natural product, but it requires processing before the raw material can be utilized. Perlite manufacturers harvest the raw form of perlite–volcanic glass called hydrated obsidian–from various sites across the country and around the globe. It is then crushed, screened, sized, and loaded on trucks or covered hopper rail cars for transport to expansion plants. In these expansion facilities, the raw ore is superheated in vertical furnaces to 1600 ℉ (871 ℃) or higher. Trapped water–anywhere from 2-5%–quickly vaporizes into steam, and the perlite rapidly expands to as much as 7 to 20 times its original size. Those pockets of water are now space for air, which is part of why perlite is known to be so lightweight and porous.

Differences in factors like initial particle size, heat intensity, air flow, and heating time will end up creating different sizes, densities and grades of the finished perlite. Once the finished product is processed, perlite manufacturers will screen the material to sort the various grades of particle size. These can range from micron, super fine and fine, to medium, coarse, and super coarse, with customizable blends also available to perlite distributors and dealers for use in horticultural, construction, industrial and other applications. A perlite manufacturer typically has a hand in harvesting, processing, sorting, bagging or containerizing, and storing perlite in specialized facilities.

The Perlite Manufacturing Process

We’ve mentioned a bit about the process that perlite manufacturers use to create the product that is then saleable and ready for use, but there’s more to know about the specific types of facilities needed to do this work.

Because the process requires precise control over heat, airflow, and moisture, perlite manufacturers need specialized facilities and equipment. The extremely high-temperature processing required to expand raw perlite–referred to as "popping"–requires vertical furnaces and the ability to raise temperatures to at least 1600℉ (871°C).

Once raw perlite is harvested, it needs to be stored in ideal conditions to prevent contamination and excess moisture. During processing perlite requires meticulous control over various parameters to ensure that it does not over or under expand or shatter. After processing, expanded perlite needs to be sorted and stored according to grade, in controlled conditions. Specialized equipment is necessary to screen, crush, and size the perlite.

What To Look For In Perlite Manufacturers

Perlite distributors and dealers looking for perlite manufacturers to work with will need to ensure that a company can meet their needs on time, on budget, and that they have the proper equipment, facilities and industry-standard certifications. They’ll also want to ensure that the company can meet their needs as far as particle size, custom mixes, packaging, and quantity. They will want to work with a perlite manufacturer who can offer consistency across the board. Perlite should be high-quality, sterile, and pure and a perlite manufacturer should be happy to share samples to attest to the quality and density of their product.

Because perlite grades vary widely and each size is best suited to certain standard and unique applications, perlite distributors and dealers will want to make sure that a perlite manufacturer can provide the specific grade or mix of grades that they require for their uses or their customers’ needs. Larger, well-established facilities are typically better able to provide consistent products, customized sizes and densities. Reliable, timely delivery, reasonable lead times, and relative proximity to the perlite manufacturer’s processing facility can all help to ensure lower freight costs and consistent supply. If possible, reading customer reviews and testimonials is a great way to get some insight into a perlite manufacturer’s business and customer service practices.

Inside Our Perlite Manufacturing Facility

At PVP Industries, we operate out of a 41,000 sq. ft. steel building along with a 14,500 sq. ft. cold storage warehouse and 12,750 sq. ft. raw materials storage building. At any given time we house roughly 3,000 tons of raw material on approximately 20 acres of land. We operate two Incon perlite furnaces and a Bouldon Lawson mixing line and bagging system. With this set up we can fill a wide range of bags and other containers for contract and private label packaging.  Our facility has six shipping/receiving docks and a portable dock ramp along with additional miscellaneous equipment to ensure smooth and easy packaging, storage and transport. We also remain current on all permits and compliant with relevant regulations.

Perlite Manufacturers vs Perlite Distributors and Dealers

This can vary company by company, but at PVP Industries we are strictly manufacturers of perlite, vermiculite, and other products. This means that we are involved in the sourcing, production and some packaging of perlite. But when it comes to selling our products, we focus on providing perlite distributors and dealers with the quantities and package sizes that they require. Perlite distributors and dealers then go on to sell PVP perlite to the end users. From agriculture, horticulture, construction and other industries that use PVP perlite, to home gardeners and hobbyists, we supply the product, but our distributors make it available for purchase on a range of scales and to a wide array of customers.
